Personality:
The first impression of Haru Okumura you receive is that she is a kind, well-mannered, mature and incredibly soft spoken young woman.
Growing up around selfish and manipulative people all of her life caused her to become an isolated and extremely lonely victim of her circumstances. Because of manipulation from her father she found it very difficult to trust those around her and form meaningful connections with them. It was because of her more privileged upbringing that Haru found it so difficult to differentiate whether someone was truly being a friend to her, or just smiling and being kind to her for their own personal gain.
She has all of the elegance and classiness one would expect her to have being a woman of the upper class and yet what seems to surprise a lot of people about her is the fact that she is extremely kind-hearted and down to earth. Instead of looking down on those people around her, she shows them basic respect, formality and decency. She remains friendly and approachable despite her previously mentioned trust issues. When she warms up to people she tends to relax just slightly on the formalities. For example, at first Haru was very formal with the Phantom Thieves after she had first joined them but after a little encouragement and warming up to them, she became very informal. Asking them just to call her "Haru" instead of senpai, and becoming really excited that she had made friends with Makoto just because they were the same age.
She also shows a much more caring and nurturing side as well, shown first by how diligently she cares for the garden on the rooftop of the school, and again when she shows great concern for any of her friends that find themselves in a time of hardship. She is the type of person who will think of others before she ever thinks of herself.
Because of the treatment she endured from her father, Haru has maturity that the majority of her peers lack, the downfall of this is that she was also sheltered and unable to speak her mind for most of her life. This makes it very easy for those around her to take advantage of her slightly more naive side or even possibly manipulate her. When she first met Morgana (a member of the Phantom Thieves and their guide), she was more than inclined to believe his gripes about the Phantom Thieves when they are in the middle of a fallout. Though she was initially painted a more negative picture of the Phantom Thieves and even told them she would not work with them due to them not being able to make up their minds, Haru proves that she is able to form her own thoughts and opinions of a situation by questioning the image she was given and giving them a chance. Gaining the bravery to speak her mind came from her confidant with protagonist. With his support she is able to face the new CEO of Okumura Foods to tell him exactly how she feels about the direction of the company and her arranged marriage.
Being able to discover her more rebellious side is where Haru discovers that she very much enjoys the thrill that battling gives her, despite the fact that she claims she is nervous before hand. She has a small sadistic streak, making comments such as enjoying the feeling she gets when a shadow is begging for it's life or even that she sees combat as a stress reliever. Also, just sayin'... if you cheat on her during Valentine's Day, the protagonist gets a personal taste of this sadistic trait when she expresses her anger and disappointment with a smile on her face.
In summary, breaking free of her Father's expectations allows Haru to blossom with confidence that she never had in the past. Her biggest motivator to give changing her own ways a chance is the friendships and trust she is able to establish within the Phantom Thieves. Proving to herself that she can overcome her own personal trauma and shed being a victim of circumstance. Haru's personal growth takes her from being the girl with the broken smile, to a confident and trustworthy member of the Phantom Thieves.
